Her Eyes Like Torches Lit The Way

In a not-so-subtle attempt to try to fix the way I looked in the mirror, I came to this…  epiphany that there are eyeballs on my face.  I don’t know what strikes your fancy, or what strikes you as odd, but I’m going to suggest that you go look at your eyes.  Right now.  You can’t see your eye’s butt, but it’s in your face.  There’s this round thing in your face.  The face of an eye is what you can really see, but the fact that there’s this round marble-like thing on your face…

…my goodness, I’m not certain why, but I grew increasingly terrified over this.  I was in the car, just looking at my reflection, when I came to this “eye” realization, and becoming aware of this new part of my body brought a huge wave of nerves upon me, I had to roll down my window and breathe in and out heavily.

Some people say that the eyes are the windows to the soul.  I’m still trying to figure out what this means (if you have an interpretation, by all means, I love hearing people’s different interpretations on different sayings/philosophies).  I say that the eyes are unfair, in which you can only see what’s outside of you—you’ve got to figure out what’s inside.  Your eyes can’t show you a visual picture.

Eyes are weird, man.

  1. I think eye's are the only honest thing about you. They're like babies - they can't pretend, hide how they feel, and they are very easily hurt. When I think about the fact that one of the most sensitive parts of my body is on display 24/7, victim to the elements, it just makes me want to wear goggles every day.

    1. I don't think I can properly express how much I love your comment and your description of eyes so I'm just going to stop trying and I'm going to link you to a picture of what my face looks like right now.

  4. I think eyes give away more than people intend them to, they have the power to express more emotion than words could ever satisfy. I once heard someone say, that silence was like staring at someone with your eyes shut. Most of what the mind interprets is not from the things we say, but from body language - even the slightest flicker of an eyelid can contradict perfectly performed prose - that's one of the ways police can tell if someone's lying. The soul is the most honest part of a person and the eyes have a beautiful, if all be it subtle, way of communicating this. That's just what I believe anyway... Nice post anywhoo, hope you have a lovely wknd!

  7. To be honest I sometimes think the exact same way. Or ears! Those things are very strange as well! Or a nose, a pointy thing right in the middle of your face :P
Anyway, your eyes are really pretty!

  9. Oh my gosh, this description is so beautiful. The second I read "I’m going to suggest that you go look at your eyes. Right now.", I did so for a good few minutes. They're tiny, little orbs which let you see the world. I'm just really intrigued by them right now.

I also think eyes are the most honest part of your body. You can have the biggest smile on your face, but if you're sad, your eyes will show that.

  14. Oh man, you made eyes sound sooo deep. Haha. I'm not sure why people say that eyes are the window to the 'soul'. I mean, what is a soul anyway? I once had to write a socratic style dialogue about what a soul is and whether it exists or not. Anyway, if a soul does in fact exists, it has something to do with each individual's personality and thoughts etc. When you look at the expression of an individual's eyes, without seeing the rest of their face, you can kind of get a glimpse of what they might be thinking or feeling, perhaps this is where the window to the soul phrase began. I'm not exactly sure though. Great post :)

  15. I agree with the first comment, eyes and eye contact are about honesty, and I have to say part of the reason I cover mine in eye makeup is to hide.

  17. Great observation. I was just contemplating similar ideas myself (and even posted about them). Sometimes the biggest things are staring us right in the face...

  18. I totally agree with 'eyes are the window to the soul'. It's the main reason why I absolutely hate making eye contact.
I don't want to show anybody my soul, not even my best friend or my mum.
I mean, that's such a huge jump to take, right?
