The Time I Got Braces

Tumblr_lgqf90x0of1qbncbyo1_500_large

There’s probably nothing more depressing than knowing you look ugly.  And don’t try the “Ugh, I’m sure you look fine, Jessica.”  Because 1) You’ve never seen me, b) As previously mentioned, I know I look ugly and cuatro, we’re talking about braces here—but not only braces…  I also wear glasses and constantly have a horribly acne-ridden face.  So, that’s like…  TRIPLE the geek face.  Do you understand how much pain a person has to go through everyday they wake up and look at themselves and know they are ugly forever and ever amen?

So, I just wanted to write this little recount of me getting braces for future reference.

So you’re getting braces, huh?

Well, this is what happened.  It was the morning of and I got to skip school.  Finally, it was nine, the time of the goshdarn appointment.  We got to the dentist and in the pre-meeting, the dentist showed around awkward pictures they had taken many months before of me with my horrible teeth and hilariously frizzy side braid.  Then she mentioned I had an overbite, that they’d probably have my wisdom teeth removed, and my teeth would probably take two years to straighten.  I have to admit, I wasn’t really paying attention, all I could think of was how I planned to live in Amish existance for two years seeing as I was going to be ugly for two years and I was also pretty nervous because I thought that getting braces put on was a painful process, but the foolish stories my cousins told me that you get your braces drilled on and they yank teeth around and that the wire cuts up your lip were not true.

So they cleaned my teeth and what not and did other weird things—I can honestly say I was sort of dozing off while they did these things.  I felt weird and my jaw was getting tired, and I was just looking at this bird who kept staring at me outside the window.  But after a while the lady told me to rinse off my mouth and I realize she had glued the brackets on.  I looked at myself in the mirror as I rinsed my mouth and I almost dropped dead.  I looked like Fregley from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid.  I felt horrendous, and I couldn’t even talk.  When they finally got the wires in, she told me to look at myself.  She asked me how I felt.  I stared at her.  She laughed.  “Yeah, you don’t have to answer that.”

So I got home and didn’t want to show anyone.  But I was happy—everyone complained it hurt, but it was three hours after and I still didn’t feel anything.  Oh, how I was wrong.  I tried eating Macaroni and Cheese and ended up crying from the pain.  My teeth felt like they were all loose, and every time I closed my mouth a sharp pain would shoot up my teeth, like a knife digging in and…  ugh, I’m getting too grossed out.  Plus, the sharp bits of the bracket did dig into the inner cheek and I felt like I couldn’t either have my mouth open for a while or close my mouth completely.  The pain was unbearable.  And the day after, it still hurt like a female dog.  And now it’s been three days after and I still haven’t eaten anything the past two days.  Anything.  I attempted to eat spaghetti, but that was a fail.  I attempted to swallow it whole without any chewing, but after a while it got depressing…  and gross.

And I still feel like the ugliest duckling.

Have any of you had braces before?

  1. um...I'm sorry you're ugly?

I am very fortunate to not have had the experience of braces-and hopefully never will. My friends have though, and I am very sorry that they are not capable of making fish faces while wearing them:(

Just remember dear, that beauty is a fleeting thing. People grow old and wrinkly and want to pet fluffy cats. Its just a fact of life.

Having said that, you are beautiful. And I'm not talking about your face (as I've never seen it), I'm talking about your writing, your feeling, and your youness, all of it stunning and brilliant in your own way.

  2. Oh honey, I know your pain. I had braces for over two years. My teeth would hurt after every tightening and adjusting (on the upside: they would work wonders for those going on diets). The wires would cut into my cheeks. I swear, I had sores on a daily basis. But the day I got them removed? I could hear the hallelujah chorus.

Of course, as anyone would tell you, the results are worth it. Otherwise, I'd still have buck teeth to this day.

    Keep on writing!

  6. I HAVE braces now. I've had them for nearly three years. So now, I absolutely hate the idea of braces and the pain I've been through and the amount of teeth that have been yanked out my mouth.

Believe me, it may not seem like it now, but they are so worth it. My teeth are nearly perfect now and I had the opposite to you...an underbite which looks ten times as worse as an overbite. I had to have a operation where they put me to sleep to take some teeth out and attach a chain to connect to my braces to two of my teeth. And I've been to the orthodontist countless of times. But it's worth it.

The first couple of times when they are 'tightened' (they're not really tightened, they just feel it), you will be like you are now but you will be fine in a couple of months. When I go now, I'm perfectly fine afterwards. My advice is to take lots of drugs and drink things like soup or mash things up even if it is spaghetti. You will just feel even more annoyed by them without food.

Also, the colour is the worst. Find a colour for them you like and suits you like I have dark blue. When you have them first on, they look too bright but they fade within a week. And also, I've found that when you smile with your mouth open, people only see the top jaw or hardly that. My teacher only realised the other day I had braces because of that.

Sorry that was long but that was my advice for you because I know how you feel. You were me nearly 3 years ago. At the end of the day, in 10 years time, you will be so happy you got them even if they did look horrible at first or made you feel crap. Good luck! :)

  7. I had braces for two years, and honestly...you get used to it! It's not as terrible as some people are making out, and whilst getting them tightened means they hurt a bit...it's sort of like when you get pain after exercise; hurts but not really painful! And it's toally worth it. But yeah, stick to soft foods for a while until they stop hurting...and if your orthodontist gave you any wax, deffo use it. And thing about the shiny shiny teeth you'll have by the end!!

  8. I got my braces on in October, and am supposed to have them on for two years. I remember the nervousness going in to get them, and completely relate to when you had to look in the mirror for the first time. I remember feeling like I was going to cry. And I know that everyone preaches that it's all for the "perfect" teeth in the end, but two years seems like a long long way away atm.
Oh, sorry for the ramble, but anywhoo. .

  9. This is me trying to sheer you up: You will have amazing teeth when you are done. Hot!
I have never had braces (thus, my teeth are nicely crooked) but I hear they are painful. I'm sorry. I suggest you diet on yogurt and painkillers.
